چکیده

Metal particles in Guarena (H6), Colby (L6) and St. Severin (LL6) were studied by optical microscopy and by electron microprobe analysis. Observations from successive polished sections through the metal particles show that kamacite and taenite grains, which often appear to be isolated particles, are connected directly or by intervening sulfides. Also tetrataenite rims are widest when adjacent to sulfide or kamacite. These observations indicate that transfer of Ni during cooling when kamacitetaenite phase growth takes place does not occur through the silicate phases but proceeds through metal and sulfide phases or along grain boundaries. By utilizing the central Ni content of taenite grains from successive sections, metallographic cooling rates were determined more precisely than by using one arbitrary section. Cooling rates determined in this manner for -1 Guarena, C•by, and St. Sev•in are 4.3 K m.y. , 4.0 K m.y. , and 1.0 K m.y. , respectively.

Metal size distributions in EH and EL chondrites

[1] EL chondrites exhibit larger average metal grain sizes than EH chondrites, a difference attributed by Easton [1983] to metamorphic coarsening, as most EL chondrites are equilibrated, and most EH chondrites are unequilibrated. In this paper, we present metal grain size data for three unequilbrated EL3 chondrites (PCA 91020; ALH 85119; MAC 88180) , and three EH3 chondrites (ALH 84170; PCA 910...

Microscopic Magnetic Study of Ordinary Chondrite Using Magneto-optical Imaging

Fe-Ni alloys, which are kamacite (<10 wt% Ni), taenite (30 ~ 40 wt % Ni), and tetrataenite (ordered Fe 50 Ni 50), are the dominant magnetic minerals in the metamorphic (type 5-6) ordinary chondrites [1], and the carrier of the remanent magnetization is high coercivity tetrataenite [1,2,3]. Metallographic studies reported that there are two types of Fe-Ni grains in the metamor-phic ordinary chon...

Lut 009, an H4 (S2, W4) ordinary chondrite meteorite from Lut Desert of Iran

Lut 009 meteorite was found during a trip to Lut Desert of Iran in March,2012, at 30°20.38' N, 59°09.04' E. Chemical compositions of equilibrated olivine (Fa19.3 ± 0.5) and orthopyroxene (Fs16.7 ± 0.6) show that the meteorite sample belongs to H group of ordinary chondrites, while the texture (chondrule petrography and plagioclase size) suggests a petrologic type of 4. The Lut 009 has been very...

Intermineral oxygen three-isotope systematics of silicate minerals in equilibrated ordinary chondrites.

High precision oxygen three-isotope ratios were measured for four mineral phases (olivine, low-Ca and high-Ca pyroxene, and plagioclase) in equilibrated ordinary chondrites (EOC) using a secondary ion mass spectrometer. Eleven EOCs were studied that cover all groups (H, L, LL) and petrologic types (4, 5, 6), including S1-S4 shock stages, as well as unbrecciated and brecciated meteorites. SIMS a...

Formation of metal in the CH chondrites ALH 85085 and PCA 91467 ANDREW J. CAMPBELL* and MUNIR HUMAYUN

Siderophile element distributions within individual metal grains in two CH chondrites, Allan Hills 85085 and Pecora Escarpment 91467, were measured by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Those metal grains that are zoned in Ni were also found to be zoned in other refractory siderophile elements, such as Ru, but not in Pd, which is not refractory but is highly siderophil...
